Correlation between social, economical and dental environmental factors and oral health in different countries
Sin Seung-Chul

Abstract
Objective: The aims of this study were to determine the relationship between the DMFT index in 12 year old subjects and factors such as the social, economical and dental environmental state in each country, in order to evaluate the influencing factors on oral health planning, in Korea.

Methods: Oral health data from 89 countries was obtained from WPRO and analysed with addition of recent information. Pearson¡¯s correlation co-efficient was estimated for each item.

Results: DMFT index in 12 year olds was estimated as high related to the DMFT rate, SiC index and df index in 5 year olds. There was no relationship between the DMFT index in 12 year olds and dental personnel systems, except the dental therapist for school dental clinics (r=?0.293 p=0.005). There was no relationship between the DMFT index in 12 year olds and the social and economical factors, except the health expenditure among GDP, where inverse correlation was revealed (r=?0.233, p=0.033). No relationship between DMFT index in 12 year olds and all items of the systemic relative factors was observed (p£¾0.05), except with the school oral health program (r=?0.320, p=0.014). However, there were some relationships between the activities in each oral health program (p£¼0.05).

Conclusions: From the results obtained, it was recommended that professional roles for the more active and especially well trained dental hygienists for preventive dental care should be developed, and greater oral health expenditures should be impremented to prevent dental caries and promote oral health for children in Korea and the rest of the world.
